Erin’s story

erin1Hi there! My name’s Erin, and I started lessons with Awesome Japanese in December 2013. I stayed with a host family in Fukuoka for October, 2014  with a Japanese family for a whole month.  The Host family were incredibly welcoming and kind. My Host Mother is very thoughtful, and her cooking is amazing! I now love Hakata ramen! My Host Father loves to sing around the house, which is a lot of fun!

The house is situated in Sue-town (Sue-machi) in Fukuoka prefecture. It took about an hour and a half on the bus to get into Tenjin, which I didn’t mind at all. Sue-town is incredibly beautiful. Almost everyday, there was mist on the verdant mountains in the distance and rice fields that stretched far and wide. There was a FamilyMart and a larger supermarket across the road just 10 minutes away from the house by foot, which was very convenient!I was incredibly lucky to experience what the countryside was like in Fukuoka. I was also able to do my homework while on the bus to school!

While I was staying there, I attended a Japanese school in Tenjin. The way they teach Japanese there is very thorough and useful. It is designed for English-speaking foreigners, and they host many social gatherings on weekends.

After spending a fun, eventful October with my host family in Fukuoka, I travelled east across Japan with a JR Pass. I visited Hiroshima, then onto Osaka, Nara, Kyoto and Tokyo. I had the time of my life!

Thanks to Awesome Japanese I cannot stress how much of an amazing opportunity they provided for me in Japan!

Jean-Luc’s story

IMG_4343My name is Jean-Luc, and I started studying at Awesome Japanese in June 2016. I spent three weeks living and studying Japanese in Fukuoka over the Christmas/New Year’s period between 2016 and 2017. Awesome Japanese were able to help me organise my trip to Japan quickly and easily. They were incredibly helpful in providing tips about public transport and sightseeing around Fukuoka. Most importantly, they helped me to meet some amazing people over the course of my stay.IMG_4319

During my trip, I stayed with two different host families: The first family I stayed with lived in a small town called Kami-sue just outside of Fukuoka city. My host mother was very kind, and an amazing cook. My host father was also very funny and used to be a pilot. He gave me an amazing demonstration of his remote-control helicopter flying skills! The house I stayed in at Kami-sue was very picturesque, with rice paddies around the neighbourhood and mountains in the distance. It was a beautiful place to stay. Since I was with my host family for New Year’s Day, I was able to eat special Japanese cooking called “Osechi” that is only eaten around New Year’s.

The second host family I stayed with lived in a suburb called Noke closer to the centre of Fukuoka, near Fukuoka University. They were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and we had lots of fun parties and dinners with their neighbours, who were also very nice people. My host mother in Noke used to be a Japanese teacher, and she introduced me to some of her students from many different countries around the world. My host father was in the Japanese Coast Guard, and he took me to see a small sea-side town outside Fukuoka called Itoshima, which was very beautiful.

Whilst I was living in Fukuoka, I had private lessons with an amazing teacher who helped me to greatly improve my Japanese proficiency. IMG_4337By tailoring the lessons to suit my individual learning needs, my teacher was able to help me get the most benefit out of my studies. My teacher also took me on several sightseeing trips around Fukuoka to some incredible places like Fukuoka Tower, Dazaifu Tenmangu Temple, Fukuoka Castle, the Fukuoka City Museum and Canal City, etc. I found the temple to be extremely interesting, especially going with a Japanese person who could explain the meaning of how Japanese people pray at a shrine.

IMG_4338After staying in Fukuoka for three weeks, I spent another 10 days visiting Kyoto, Nara, Osaka and Tokyo. Thanks to my stay in Japan, I was able to greatly increase my Japanese proficiency. I was able to form sentences and speak to people in a faster, more conversational manner, my vocabulary increased and I was exposed to a variety of dialects and slang expressions outside of the standard Japanese taught in textbooks and classrooms. I am incredibly grateful to Awesome Japanese for helping me to have such a wonderful language learning experience!!

The family I stayed with was always willing to assist me with learning and explaining things when required. My host mother was a fun, easy going person who cooked amazing food and also taught me how to make some foods that I love eating.

She also organized a trip to the cost which was great fun and beautiful. She would also organize little parties with her friends. My host father was funny and always loved sharing videos of cars and watching interesting shows on TV which helped with listening.

While he was at work a lot when he was there he’d always find a way to make everyone laugh. While I was in Fukuoka I attended private lessons with my teacher twice a week. These lessons had a lot of information and really did test my Japanese speaking, listening.

It also gave me a chance to see various places around Fukuoka and other places in Kyushu. I certainly learned a lot about the language during my time in Fukuoka, and would highly recommend this to anyone one who wants to experience Fukuoka, meet some amazingly kind people from Japan and improve their Japanese.
