【One Point Lesson】Before / After a noun

Hi everyone, welcome to our one point lesson. We would like to explain a grammar point about time words before and after a noun.

 

Noun の まえに (no maeni) means  Before noun, and

Noun の あとで (no atode) means After noun

まえ(mae) might be already familiar for you as the word for the position “in front of”. The meaning is depends on a context.

 

Please have a look at these examples below.

  • しごと  の  まえに  ジム   に  いきます。 (Shigoto no mae ni jimu ni ikimasu.)
    I will go to the gym before work.
  • しごと  の  あとで  かいもの  を  します。(Shigoto no ato de kaimono o shimasu.)
    I will go shopping after work.

しごと (Shigoto) is a noun that means work.  You can substitute しごと(Shigoto) with any other noun! Here are some more examples:

  • がっこう  の  あとで  うち で べんきょう  を  します。(Gakko no atode uchi de benkyo o shimasu.)
    I will study at home after school.
  • ひるごはん の  まえに  うち に  かえります。(Hirugohan no maeni uchi ni kaerimasu.)
    I will go home before lunch.
  • じゅぎょう  の  あとで  しゅくだい  を  します。(Jugyo no atode shukudai o shimasu.)
    I will do my homework after the class.
