Stop! It’s a wrong way to toast (乾杯).

Toasting (乾杯) is a normal etiquette when people have formal dinner. However, what should those who do not drink alcohol do? Please try to guess which one of the following is the best way to refuse decently.

  1. 水が入っているグラスで乾杯 (Let me toast with a cup of water.)
  2. カラのグラスで乾杯 (Let me toast with an empty glass)
  3. 飲まないけれど、グラスにお酒を入れて乾杯 (Though I don’t drink alcohol, I will toast with alcohol filled)

The answer is No. 3.

The reason why you should not use No. 2 is simple. However, why is it not appropriate for No. 1?

Have you ever heard 水杯(みずさかづき)?  It means that people who will not meet again in their life toast the last time by a cup of water. Therefore, it will be awfully awkward to say “I am not gonna see you again” in a cheerful atmosphere.

Do you think it is interesting? See you next time!
